1966-77 Bronco History

Launched in 1965 as a 1966 model, the first early Bronco was a gamble by Ford on the newly emerging outdoor enthusiast market. Prior to 1966 this small market had only a handful of players; Jeep (made then by Kaiser), International Scout, Toyota Landcruiser and Land Rover. There was a market, but not one that any of the American big three car companies had yet tried to tackle.

Sensing a growing trend, Ford did some research, interviewing off-road clubs and members about what they wanted in a 4×4. The result was the compact, agile and versatile Ford Bronco. The concept was to give the weekend four wheeler a utilitarian truck for trips to the mountains or desert, but at the same time provide a family friendly vehicle that was comfortable on the highway and around town.
